Factors Affecting the Sustainability of Microfinance Institutions: A Case of Malawi Microfinance Institutions

Background: Micro Finance Institutions (MFIs) have been used as a tool for poverty alleviation in many developing economies globally, including Malawi. However, their sustainability countries has dependent solely on loan repayment, donor aid, and subsidies. Aim: This study aimed at investigating the factors that influence of MFIs Methods: A cross-sectional survey was conducted from November to December 2020 among employees central region Convenience purposive sampling techniques were collect data online using google form sent via social media platforms. Data analyzed IBM SPSS software with Statistical significance placed 0.05. Results: 120 respondents completed representing 79.3% response rate, which 63% male. The majority fell within age group 31 - 40 years, 58%, having attained universities vocational colleges’ education level, 32.8%. With an experience above 16 41.2% branch managers, 49.6%. results ordinary least square regression indicated reporting management system (RLMS) (β = 0.200, P 0.021), corporate-governance 0.257, 0.004), commercialization 0.161, 0.047) positively significantly influencing MFI. On other hand, design/type -0.211, 0.006), portfolio -0.179, 0.050) found be negatively impacting Lastly, variables over-indebtedness (B 0.077, 0.426), disbursement 0.121, 0.104) statistically insignificant. Conclusion: Our argues through commercialization, standardized reporting, effective systems, stakeholder-based approach corporate governance, favored board independence scale cost is critical improving financial sustainability.
